| Can We Access a Fire Hydrant Near You? |
Fri. Feb 19th 2010
Citizens Fire Company is asking that all Jefferson County residents insure that fire hydrants in their area are accessible to fire and rescue personnel in the event of an emergency.
Many hydrants in the County are still partially covered with snow, while some have been completely covered by plows, etc. As residents continue to dig out and clear paths around the neighborhood, please take a few moments to clear the area around the fire hydrants as well. By clearing the area around a fire hydrant, emergency service personnel are better able to locate and make access in the event of an emergency.
In addition, residents can also assist emergency personnel by making sure their address is visible from the roadway and by providing clear paths to all entrances of their home. Clear paths also reduce the potential risk of injuries from slips and falls. Also, be sure to clear the area around heat pumps.
With warmer temperatures coming into the area, the snow and ice is beginning to melt. The water from this melting snow will cause standing water in some areas and may create slippery and dangerous conditions. Keeping the storm drains clear will help reduce these conditions.
Most importantly, remember that shoveling snow is labor intensive. The level of intense exertion combined with cold temperatures will increase heart rate and blood pressure. This can lead to heart attacks and other potentially life threatening injuries. Citizens Fire Company reminds everyone to follow the safety tips as provided by Consumer Reports and to avoid exertion whenever possible while removing snow and remember to stay hydrated.
